Gilbert, Hopson named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Darby Gilbert and Mya Hopson have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for May 6-12.

Gilbert, a freshman right-hander from Pascagoula, struck out 11 batters in 4.1 innings of relief and picked up the win in Gulf Coast's 10-8 win over No. 16 Meridian in Game 1 of their Region 23 qualifying series.

Hopson, a sophomore first baseman Madison Central, went 2-for-3 with a home run for No. 12 Gulf Coast in a 6-4 first-round victory over Copiah-Lincoln. Her two-run homer opened the scoring in the game.

Also nominated:

Cullan O'Shea, a sophomore first baseman from Mobile, hit the game-winning grand slam to finish a two-game sweep of Meridian.
