Hancock, Sanders named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Miller Hancock and Avery Sanders have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for March 25-31.

Hancock, a sophomore shortstop from East Webster, hit three home runs, batted .533 and slugged 1.200 in four Gulf Coast victories. He had two hits and three RBI in a 15-3 seven-inning win at Copiah-Lincoln, then hit a home run in 7-3 win in the nightcap. His three-run homer in the seventh tied the game in a 10-8 win over East Mississippi and he added a sacrifice fly later in the game. His second home run of the day drove in his second run of an 11-1 win in five innings.

Sanders, a sophomore right-hander from Thibodaux, La., got two wins for No. 9 Gulf Coast, including beating No. 1 Jones 12-2 in five innings. She held Jones to two unearned runs on four hits, striking out five. Sanders shut out East Mississippi in her other start, winning 8-0 in six innings. It was another four-hitter that saw her strike out seven and walk just one.

Also nominated:

Kole Kittrell, a sophomore right-hander from Greene County, had two saves for Mississippi Gulf Coast. He entered with the bases loaded and struck out every batter he faced to retire the last four in a 7-3 win at Copiah-Lincoln. He pitched the last inning in a 10-8 win against Mississippi Delta for another save.

Briana Shores, a freshman third baseman from Richland, went 4-for-7 with two home runs and five RBI to help No. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast split with No. 1 Jones in Ellisville. She slugged her first two collegiate home runs in a 9-7 loss in the opener, then had a two-run double in a 10-2 victory. She fielded her position flawlessly while making a string of spectacular plays
