Bulldogs swept in 2021 opener

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast opened the 2021 baseball season Sunday by getting swept by Pearl River.

The Wildcats (4-0) won the first game 16-6 in six innings, then outslugged the Bulldogs 11-2 in Game 2 at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.

Pearl River slugged eight homers in the first game and added three more in the second.

Luke Welborn (Fr., Locust Grove Ga./Locust Grove) had a home run in the first game and drove in three runs with his two hits. He was the only player with multiple hits for the Bulldogs, who had nine hits. Alex McWhorter (Fr., Mobile Ala./Faith Academy) had a double and an RBI.

The Bulldogs managed only five hits in the second.

The first set of round-robin games against MACCC South opponents do not count as conference games. Gulf Coast will play again Tuesday when East Central visits Perkinston. First pitch in the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
