PERKINSTON — Jared Tribett came off the bench unexpectedly and celebrated his birthday in style, hitting two home runs in a Game 1 win over No. 9 Hinds on Wednesday at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.
The Bulldogs won the opener 5-4 thanks to his second two-run homer before losing the nightcap 11-5.
Jared Tribett (Fr., Lumberton/Lumberton) got inserted into the game in the second inning after P.J. Harrison pulled a hamstring, and his first time up he lined a homer to left. He cut a 4-0 deficit in half with one swing.
"I just told myself to be thankful for the opportunity, and I took it," he said. "I got fastballs both times. It was pretty amazing."
Dawson Walters (Fr., Flora/Tri-County Academy) made it 4-3 with a two-out RBI double in the sixth. Tribett's second line-drive tater came in the seventh inning and put the Bulldogs ahead.
"We've had several guys who have come up off the bench and produced," Gulf Coast coach Wes Thigpen said. "They've been ready for that role. It was his birthday today and he gets two big home runs."
Breck Jones (Fr., Gulfport/Gulfport) got the win in relief with a scoreless seventh inning. Matthew DeLano (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) blanked the Eagles for two innings to earn the save.
The Bulldogs made four errors in the second game and didn't managed a single three-up, three-down inning. After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first, Noah Blythe (Fr., Lexington Ky./Tates Creek) capped a four-run retaliatory strike with a three-run homer.
The Bulldogs led 5-4 after two an RBI single by Brendan McCauley (Fr., Gulfport/Harrison Central), but they had only three hits in the nightcap.
"I felt like that game should have been a lot closer than it turned out to be," Thigpen said. "We've got to get better out of the bullpen, and it's the same story when we don't defend, we're not in it."
Gulf Coast (6-6, 3-1 MACCC), which swept at No. 11 Northeast Mississippi last Saturday, plays at home again Saturday when No. 4 Northwest Mississippi visits. It will be the third straight top-15 opponent to start the MACCC schedule. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
Hinds is now 4-6, 2-2.
