Flowers beats No. 19 ECCC

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast was getting ready to play its fifth game in four days, and there wasn't anybody the Bulldogs would have liked to see climb the hill than Dawson Walters.

Walters threw a three-hitter to beat No. 19 East Central 7-2 in the last game of an MACCC tripleheader.

"It's always fun to go watch Dawson Flowers compete and get after it," Gulf Coast coach Wes Thigpen said. "His fastball was really special tonight, and he got a bunch of groundballs and we defended behind him."

No. 8 Meridian beat the Bulldogs in the first game at Ken "Curly" Farris Field 8-3, and each team left Perk 1-1 on the day because East Central won the middle game 9-7.

The postseason had been set after Monday's doubleheader split at Mississippi Delta, and the Bulldogs (20-19) will travel to Fulton next week for a best-of-three Region 23 qualifier series against No. 16 Itawamba.

Walters didn't give East Central much of a chance Thursday, striking out eight. He said it was the best he'd felt in a few weeks.

"I was really sinking it well," he said. "I was getting it down, and they were swinging over the top of it. The changeup was working good, and I had the curveball working for a few innings. It was nice to have everything for strikes."

The Warriors paired a two-out single and home run in the third to take a brief 2-1 lead.

Gulf Coast responded with three in the bottom of the frame. Alex McWhorter (Fr., Mobile Ala./Faith Academy) doubled in a run, and Dawson Walters (Fr., Flora/Tri-County Academy) tripled in another.

McWhorter hit an 0-2 pitch for a two-out RBI double in the fourth.

Walters, Josh Cary (Fr., Petal/Petal), Canaan Ray (Fr., Poplarville/Poplarville) and Brendan McCauley (Fr., Gulfport/Harrison Central) had two hits each.

The Bulldogs fell behind 5-0 in the first inning against Meridian. Connor Holliman (Fr., Gulfport/St. Patrick) had a two hits and two RBI.
