Gulf Coast moves into 3rd with sweep

Mississippi Gulf Coast moved into third place in the MACCC, running its winning streak to five games Saturday with a sweep of Holmes at Goodman.

Luke Welborn (Fr., Locust Grove Ga./Locust Grove) drove in four runs in a 14-5 win in seven innings, and Drake Henderson (Fr., Sand Hill/Greene County) threw his third complete game in his last four outings to win 6-3.

The Bulldogs scored seven times in the third inning of Game 1, and Welborn led off the fourth with a homer. He singled in a run in the fifth to make it 9-1 and added a two-run single in the seventh.

Josh Cary (Fr., Petal/Petal) had two hits, including a double, and drove in three. Alex McWhorter (Fr., Mobile Ala./Faith Academy), Noah Blythe (Fr., Lexington, Ky./Tates Creek) and Ethan Coleman (Fr., Lucedale/George County) had two hits each.

Every Bulldog starter had a hit and scored a run. Antoine Harris (Fr., Chalmette La./Chalmette) struck out five in five innings to pick up the win, with Matthew DeLano (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) allowing one hit in two innings of work.

Henderson struck out 11 in his outing, allowing just two hits and two walks. Two of the three runs he allowed were earned.

Connor Holliman (Fr., Gulfport/St. Patrick) and Dawson Flowers (Fr., Brookhaven/Brookhaven Academy) had back-to-back doubles in the second. Flowers' double drove in two to open the scoring, and Cary followed with a single.

Holmes scored twice on passed balls in the fifth, but McWhorter's two-run double in the seventh was followed by a P.J. Harrison (Fr., Gulfport/Harrison Central) RBI single that gave Henderson some insurance.

Henderson improves to 6-1, and Gulf Coast has now won nine of its last 10 games.

The Bulldogs travel to Copiah-Lincoln on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
