Gulf Coast freshmen look to continue growth

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast saw everything come together in its passing game last week at Southwest. The Bulldogs will need to see continued improvement Thursday when East Central visits A.L. May Memorial Stadium.
"We've put in a lot of work there, and over the course of time, we've seen that improve in practice on a weekly basis," Gulf Coast coach Jack Wright said. "It finally came to fruition Thursday night, being able to run and catch the routes we've been throwing a long time."
Gulf Coast (4-2, 1-2 MACJC South) kicks off at 7 p.m. against the Warriors (3-3, 2-1), looking to climb the division standings after Chance Lovertich (Fr., Jackson Prep/Brandon) broke a school record with six touchdowns passes in a 56-7 win at Summit. East Central is in the midst of a two-game losing streak, having put a huge scare into East Mississippi two weeks ago before falling on a last-second field goal in a 24-21 loss. Coach Ken Karcher's Warriors lost 42-17 to Copiah-Lincoln last week.
"They're just really well coached," Wright said. "They don't give up a lot of big plays on defense. They move the chains efficiently offensively. They don't make mistakes. It's as close to mistake-free as they can get."
Warriors running back James Smith III has four 100-yard games on the season, and he averages 4.7 yards per carry. Quarterback Mario Asagunla has thrown 12 touchdowns against four interceptions, with Kevontaye Caston (four scores) Jaylen Zachery (three scores) his favorite targets.
It's the time of season when the freshman class starts to make some noise, and that's certainly the case for the Gulf Coast defense. Wright pointed out great efforts from linebacker Karlos Dillard (Fr., Gulfport/Gulfport) and defensive back Tim Steward (Fr., Hazlehurst/Hazelhurst) at Southwest.
There was also a contributor up front.
"Tylan Jones was given an opportunity to go in there early as a true freshman," Wright said. "He made an impact, created a couple of negative plays. He stood out."
