Carter, Hunt lead MGCCC honorees

PERKINSTON — Tight end Denzel Carter and kicker/punter Mason Hunt have been named to the All-NJCAA Region 23 team by MACJC coaches.

Five other Bulldogs joined them in receiving postseason honors: linebacker Jacobi Hearn, defensive lineman Demonde Harris and offensive linemen Jacob Shoemaker, Nick Dunomes and Sidney Wells. Hearn, Carter and Hunt made the All-MACJC South first team, with Harris, Shoemaker, Dunomes and Wells earning second-team nods.

Carter, a freshman tight end from St. Petersburg, Fla., had three touchdown catches and was a key contributor to the Gulf Coast rushing attack.

Hunt, a sophomore from Stone High, would have led the MACJC and ranked fourth in the country in punting with a 40.9-yard average. He was one punt short of qualifying despite kicking or punting every ball the Bulldogs kicked or punted all season. Hunt made 5 of 6 field goal attempts and 41 of 44 PATs. Hunt won a spot on the All-Region team for punting, and he was the South Division's top kicker and punter.

Hearn, a sophomore from Clinton, finished fifth in the MACJC with eight sacks, ranking tied for 19th in the country. His 16 tackles for loss were tied for 22nd in the country. Hearn had 48 solo tackles, 16 assists, forced one fumble and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Harris, a freshman from Edna Karr in New Orleans, had 10 solos and 11 assists in eight games, including two tackles for loss.

Shoemaker, a tackle from Harrison Central, Dunomes, a guard from Gulfport, and Wells, a guard from Clinton, started all nine games for the second-ranked rushing defense in the MACJC and 11th in the NJCAA. Gulf Coast tied for fifth in the country in rushing touchdown, and the line allowed quarterback Chance Lovertich to finish second in the country in efficiency.
