No. 8 MGCCC cashes in set pieces in 4-1 win

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast men's soccer coach Chris Handy would like to always see his pregame talks turn into such direct action.

The No. 8 Bulldogs bounced Southwest Mississippi 4-1 Tuesday at Bary Thrash Field. Abdul Omar (So., Madison/Germantown) had a goal and an assist.

"One of the things we talked about before the game was making sure we were a little more successful with our set-piece chances. I think all four came as a result."

They scored once off a corner kick, and three times off beautifully struck free kicks.

Chad Hudson (So., Gulfport/St. Patrick) headed home a corner by Omar in the 15th minute. Ten minutes later, Hyungjoon Lee (Fr., Suwon, South Korea/Dongbuk) put a free kick in the upper-90.

He hit the woodwork two other times and was a menace all over the field.

"He's a good player," Handy said. "We trust him. When we have a hole, he fills it."

Klaidas Pudlauskas (Fr., London, England/Gaynes School) hit the crossbar on his free kick in the 43rd minute, but Brycen Phillips (Fr., Wiggins/Stone) was there to get a poacher's goal for a 3-0 halftime lead.

Southwest got one back in the 61st minute before Omar put one of his own just inside the upper angle 11 minutes before the final whistle.

"I thought we came out with a lot of energy," Handy said. "We'd like to get a goal or two through the run of play, but overall, on a sloppy field I thought it was OK."
