No. 12 Gulf Coast is playoff-bound

PERKINSTON — No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast clinched a postseason spot Tuesday with a workmanlike 3-1 win over Copiah-Lincoln at Bary Thrash Field.

"We're in the playoffs," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. "I thought we played better, obviously, but we still need to get sharper if we're going to have any success in the playoffs."

The Bulldogs (8-5, 6-2 MACCC South) scored twice in the first half, then had to sweat a little after the Eagles cut their deficit in half soon after the break.

Chad Hudson (So., Gulfport/St. Patrick) scored the insurance goal off a perfect corner delivery from Seongbin Son (Fr., Seoul, South Korea/Guhyun) in the 82nd minute.

Ivan Gonzalez (Fr., Olive Branch/Center Hill) scored a wonder goal in the 11th minute to open the scoring, curling a shot from the top corner of the penalty area off the bottom of the crossbar on the far side of goal.

Brycen Phillips (Fr., Wiggins/Stone) worked hard down the right sideline, turned the corner at the goal line and was brought down in the area in the 40th minute. Hyungjoon Lee (Fr., Suwon, South Korea/Dongbuk) banged in the shot from the spot.

Gulf Coast plays at Southwest on Friday before closing out the regular season Tuesday against Pearl River, which clinched the MACCC South title Tuesday.
