No. 12 Bulldogs pull away late

GULFPORT — Thanks in large part to the weather, No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast hasn't played frequently, due in large part to the weather. And the Bulldogs men's team hasn't played at home very much because of the schedule.

Friday, they were able to get back on the field, but the weather forced them to move a home game to the Gulfport Sportsplex because of wet conditions in Perkinston.

That didn't slow down the Gulf Coast offense, though, which poured in on in a 5-2 win over Hinds.

"It's a good win over a good program," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said. "We're still trying to find some consistency. We hope to start playing regularly. It's important for us to start scoring some goals."

Ashton Taylor (So., Olive Branch/Center Hill) played a nice give-and-go to open the scoring in the 10th minute.

Hinds equalized 15 minutes later, but Michael Bell (Fr., Jackson/Murrah) answered immediately and the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Hyungjoon Lee (Fr., Suwon, South Korea/Dongbuk) set up Fabien Barker (So., Madison/Madison Central) on the back door for a 3-1 bulge in the second half.

Hinds pulled back another goal, but Lee was on the end of a pass from Ivan Gonzalez (Fr., Olive Branch/Center Hill) to restore the two-goal advantage in the 77th minute.

Brycen Phillips (Fr., Wiggins/Stone) roofed the final goal in the final minutes.

"In general, I thought the boys played well," Handy said. "Not getting to play home games stink, but the guys don't seem to miss a beat. They just line up and play. We've got a big game on Tuesday."

The Bulldogs travel to Ellisville for the final game of the first half of the MACCC South schedule. The rain-delayed match starts at 7 p.m.
