Dawson’s double-double not enough for Bulldogs

Darius Dawson's double-double wasn't enough to finish a second-half comeback for Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday in Raymond, and the Bulldogs lost 87-84 to Hinds in non-conference play.

Dawson, a sophomore forward from Sumter, S.C., had 23 points and 10 rebounds, both game-highs for Gulf Coast. Jabarie Robinson (Fr., Raymond/Raymond) had 19 points, seven assists, six assists and three steals for Gulf Coast.

Gulf Coast trailed 68-58 with 10 minutes to play before starting to mount its comeback. JaVon Anderson (So., Columbia S.C./Ridge View) put back his own miss with 2:31 to play to get Gulf Coast with 81-80, but the Bulldogs could never get over the hump.

Hinds missed the front end of a one-and-one with 9.8 seconds to play, but Gulf Coast couldn't convert on two 3-point attempts in the final seconds.

Anderson finished with 13 points, and Donovan Sanders (So., Walls/Lake Cormorant) had 10 points and six rebounds. Anthony Robinson (Fr., Long Beach/Long Beach) also had 10 points.

Hinds (6-2) shot 53.3 percent from the 3-point line and 53 percent from the field. Gulf Coast missed 11-of-12 from behind the arc in the second half.

Gulf Coast (5-5) had a three-game win streak broken. The Bulldogs have a pair of games at Dantzler Arena coming up. They entertain Lawson State on Wednesday in a game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and LSU Eunice the next night at 6. Both games will be streamed at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.
