No. 14 Gulf Coast races past No. 23 Wolves

No. 14 Mississippi Gulf Coast came out early and established dominance over No. 23 Copiah-Lincoln in Wesson and cruised to an 8-1 win in MACCC men's tennis action.

"Co-Lin has been tricky against us the past two years I've been here coaching," Bulldogs coach Sam Blackburn said. "I told the guys that, and they definitely heard it. They jumped out to a great doubles sweep, and all three courts played phenomenally."

Gulf Coast stayed unbeaten on the season through five matches and is 4-0 in the conference. The Bulldogs have dropped just one point in those four league wins.

Chace Bolan (So., Laurel/Northeast Jones) and Triston Hill (Fr., Perkinston/Stone) made quick work of their No. 3 doubles opponents, winning 8-0. Paul Gayk (So., Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany/Berufskolleg Lehnerstrasse) and Owen Stice (Fr., Atlanta, Ga./Laurel Springs) won 8-1 at No. 2.

Gayk won his No. 1 singles match in straight sets, and Nos. 3-6 dropped only seven games over eight sets.

Gulf Coast now sets its sights on No. 15 Jones, which visits Perkinston on Tuesday. The teams have split the last two MACCC and NJCAA Region 23 titles, with the Bobcats winning last season.

"I think it would have been nice to have a tougher match the last week or so, but we're playing good and playing confident," Blackburn said. "The guys are clicking well on the doubles court, and we've got a strong 1 through 6 singles lineup. I'm feeling good and the guys are excited and ready for a tough match. They're ready to stay out there as long as it takes to win. I think it will be a fun day."
