No. 14 Gulf Coast grabs 2 more wins

No. 14 Mississippi Gulf Coast picked up two more wins Wednesday at the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship in McKinney, Texas.

The Bulldogs are in 14th place in the team standings after three days of play at The Courts McKinney.

Kyle Bond (So., Wiggins/Stone) and Orren Ladner (So., Perkinston/Stone) picked up a full point by winning their No. 2 doubles consolation bracket quarterfinal match. They beat Lewis & Clark's James Makaranga-Mlungisi Mhlanga 8-6.

"Kyle and Orren didn't get broken at all," Gulf Coast coach Sam Blackburn said. "They broke early and had some more chances to break, but served it out."

All four semifinalists in that bracket are MACCC teams. Gulf Coast will play Meridian, with Jones and Northwest Mississippi on the other side.

Paul Gayk (So., Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany/Berufskolleg Lehnerstrasse) cruised in his No. 1 singles consolation bracket quarterfinal. He blitzed Bevill State's Ayden Anderson 8-2.

"It was pretty simple," Blackburn said. "He just played Paul Gayk tennis. He'll play the No. 4 seed tomorrow, which means he'll have to step it up."

Gayk will play Barton's Gustavo Campos at 8 a.m.

Gulf Coast is two points back of 12th-place Jones. Meridian is in 16th place with 11 points, Hinds is 19th and Northwest is 25th. The tournament concludes Friday.
