Bulldogs win late twice on Opening Day

Mississippi Gulf Coast's first day of the softball season could not have been more drama filled. The Bulldogs won two one-run games in the Mardi Gras Invitational in Youngsville, La.

Kamryn LaFosse (So., Lake Charles/Sam Houston) hit a three-run walk-off homer to beat Angelina College 6-5, and Olivia Falcon (Fr., St. Amant, La./St. Amant) threw a four-hitter to beat Lamar State-Port Arthur 1-0. Jett Harrell (So., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) hit a sixth-inning homer for the game's only run.

The Bulldogs survived a rocky game in the field in the opener, committing five errors. All five runs Harrell surrendered were unearned. Gulf Coast rallied from three deficits to win.

Natalie Shaw (So., Olive Branch/Marshall Academy) hit a single that forced an error in the second to tie the game at 1. Harrell and Jorja Roberson (So., Branyan/East Union) reached in the third and caused havoc on the bases, scoring on a double steal and a passed ball.

Angelina scored twice in the fifth, and it took a pinch-hit leadoff line drive to first by Irina Sanford (Fr., Lucedale/George County) that forced an error to spark a rally. Aleah Beaugez (Fr., D'Iberville/D'Iberville) walked, and two batters later LaFosse ripped a homer deep to left for the winner.

Harrell allowed four hits and struck out three for the win. She had two of the Bulldogs' four hits in the second game, smacking a leadoff homer for the game-winner.

Falcon struck out four with only one walk, throwing 57 of 88 pitches for strikes.

Gulf Coast will play National Park College at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, then wait to play Pratt at 7 p.m.
