Bulldogs’ two-out hitting gets sweep started

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast used a pair of two-out rallies to jump-start the offense on the way to a Tuesday sweep of Southwest Mississippi.

The Bulldogs won the opener 10-2 in six innings at Ross-Smith Field, before closing the second one out 11-2 in five innings.

"They're battling," Gulf Coast coach David Kuhn said. "They're doing a good job with two strikes, moving runners, hitting behind runners. They're having really good team at-bats, not being selfish."

Gulf Coast answered a solo homer in the fourth with a two-out triple by Savannah Wilbanks (Fr., Southaven/DeSoto Central) and a double by CC Lynn (So., Waynesboro/Wayne County) to tie it.

After another solo Bears homer, AB Parrish (Fr., Corinth/Alcorn Central) tied the game with a two-out double. Aleah Beaugez (Fr., D'Iberville/D'Iberville) had a go-ahead single. After Wilbanks singled in another, Lynn doubled home two more for a 6-2 lead.

Gulf Coast closed out a four-run sixth on a rare two-run sacrifice fly by Wilbanks for the final margin.

Jett Harrell (So., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) had three hits, and Lynn, Wilbanks, and Natalie Shaw (So., Olive Branch/Marshall Academy) had two each.

Olivia Falcon (Fr., St. Amant, La./St. Amant) struck out six and allowed six hits for the win.

Gulf Coast trailed 4-0 coming to bat in the bottom of the second in Game 2 before Shaylynn Hoak (Fr., Vancleave/Vancleave) smacked a two-run double. Jorja Roberson (So., Branyan/East Union) had an RBI groundout to get Gulf Coast with a run.

The Bulldogs exploded for 10 runs with two outs in the third to put the game away. Harrell had the big hit with a three-run homer.

Gulf Coast (23-12, 5-2 MACCC) will travel to Goodman on Thursday to play Holmes. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

"We had some good team wins today," Kuhn said. "I'm really pleased. I liked our approach today. I thought we came to play."

Southwest falls to 13-20, 1-5.
