Bulldogs lose twice at No. 4 Co-Lin

Mississippi Gulf Coast let No. 4 Copiah-Lincoln, the defending national softball champions, off the hook twice Wednesday. The Bulldogs had late leads in both ends of an MACCC doubleheader but lost 5-4 and then 8-7 in nine innings.

Gulf Coast (18-12, 1-3 MACCC) outhit the Wolves 12-8 in the first game. Jorja Roberson (So., Branyan/East Union) had an RBI double in the third inning, and Natalie Shaw (So., Olive Branch/Marshall Academy) drove her in with a single for a 2-1 lead.

Savannah Wilbanks (Fr., Southaven/DeSoto Central) made it 3-1 in the fifth with an RBI single, and Jett Harrell (So., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) smacked a solo homer in the sixth for a 4-2 lead.

Co-Lin scored three times in the bottom of the inning and shut down Gulf Coast in the seventh.

The Bulldogs were up 7-2 in the fourth inning of the second game.

Roberson singled in a run to start a four-run third, punctuated by Shaw's two-run single to make it 4-2.

Irina Sanford (Fr., Lucedale/George County) and Harrell singled in a run in the fourth followed by a Roberson sacrifice fly that made it 7-2.

An error opened the door for a three-run Co-Lin fourth, and the Wolves tied it with a two-out sing in the sixth. Co-Lin (13-2, 2-0) got three singles in the ninth to win it.

The Bulldogs turn around and entertain Itawamba on Thursday, in a game moved up because of the weather forecast. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Ross-Smith Field.
