Bulldogs outslug No. 5 PRCC for split

Balls were flying out of the park in Poplarville left and right Tuesday, and Mississippi Gulf Coast split a slugfest against No. 5 Pearl River.

The Bulldogs gave up six home runs in the second game, but hit three themselves to win 14-11. It was a bounce back after surrendering two late home runs to lose the first game 9-7.

Gulf Coast hit four homers of their own in a long, windy MACCC doubleheader. The Bulldogs are 31-15 overall, 13-6 in conference play. They're in sixth place in the standings.
Pearl River is 34-7, 16-4.

In the nightcap, Aleah Beaugez (Fr., D'Iberville/D'Iberville) had a two-run homer in a three-run first for the Bulldogs, and Savannah Wilbanks (Fr., Southaven/DeSoto Central) had a three-run homer in a four-run second.

Pearl River scored five times in the second to get within a run, but Gulf Coast immediately responded. Jett Harrell (So., Clarksdale/Lee Academy) singled in a run, and Beaugez drove in two more runs with a double to make it 10-6.

The Bulldogs tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth, then got a solo homer from Jorja Roberson (So., Branyan/East Union) in a two-run seventh.

Beaugez went 3-for-4 with a homer, two doubles and four RBI. Natalie Shaw (So., Olive Branch/Marshall Academy), Irina Sanford (Fr., Lucedale/George County) and Roberson had three hits each in a 19-hit onslaught.

Shaylynn Hoak (Fr., Vancleave/Vancleave) and AB Parrish (Fr., Corinth/Alcorn Central) had two hits each.

Olivia Falcon pitched five innings of relief for the win, striking out four.

In the opener, Gulf Coast stormed back from a 5-0 deficit by scoring seven unanswered. Harrell hit a bases-loaded triple in the fourth to drive in three runs, then caught PRCC napping and stole home.

In the fifth, Sanford doubled in the tying run ahead of Roberson, who hit a two-run homer.

The Wildcats tied it back up with a two-run homer in the fifth and won it with a walk-off homer in the seventh.

Shaw and Abi Williams (So., Columbia/Columbia Academy) had three hits.

Gulf Coast is off this weekend with the open date in the MACCC schedule. The Bulldogs will travel to Bay Minette on April 16 for a single game at 1 p.m. against Coastal Alabama-South. They'll be back at Perk the following day for an MACCC doubleheader against Hinds.
