PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast scored the first 18 points of the second quarter and ran away from Lawson State on Saturday, winning 76-50 at Dantzler Arena.

"We played well," Bulldogs coach Hope Adams said. "We pushed the ball well and we shot the ball well. Over the last couple of years, we've been struggling behind the arc, but I think we've gotten better shooting the 3-ball."

Gulf Coast improves to 6-2 on the season in its last non-conference game on the schedule. Lawson State is 5-4.

The Bulldogs led 18-17 after the first period before holding the Cougars scoreless until 2:42 left until halftime. TK Catchings (So., New Hebron/Simpson Academy), who led the Bulldogs with 19 points, started and ended the run with put-back baskets.

"We started taking charges and being in the right spots defensively," Adams said. "TK grabbed a lot of key offensive rebounds, and then we ran with the ball and were able to get some baskets in transition."

Ja'Sharreah Hunt (Fr., Roxie/Franklin County) added 18, with Simaru Fields (Fr., Gulfport/Gulfport) picking up 14 and Elsie Harris (So., Mobile, Ala./B.C. Rain) 12.

Gulf Coast returns to action Monday with a key MACCC clash. The Bulldogs travel to Ellisville to take on No. 12 Jones. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. Fans should buy tickets ahead of time online at http://jcbobcats.com/tickets because they can save $3 on a $10 ticket purchased at the door.
