Bulldogs slip to 4th after loss at Meridian

An ice-cold second quarter Monday created big problems for Mississippi Gulf Coast, but the Bulldogs battled back to lead late. They couldn't close it out at Meridian, though, falling 60-57.

Gulf Coast scored just two points in the second 10 minutes and saw a 13-9 first-quarter advantage turn into a nine-point deficit at halftime. The Bulldogs trailed by 13 with 4:20 to play in the third quarter before mounting a comeback.

They trailed 45-38 at the start of the final quarter, but tied it at 51 with 4:20 play. Elsie Harris (So., Mobile, Ala./B.C. Rain) hit a 3-pointer with 2:19 to play for a 57-54 lead, but the Bulldogs wouldn't score again.

Simaru Fields (Fr., Gulfport/Gulfport) was the only Bulldog in double digits with 22 points.

Meridian (18-3, 7-2 MACCC) moved back in front of Gulf Coast (12-5, 7-3) for third place in the MACCC. The Bulldogs are a half-game in front of Coahoma for fourth, which is the final spot that gets a bye in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament.

Gulf Coast is off on Thursday. The Bulldogs will be back at Dantzler Arena on Monday to face Northwest Mississippi. Tipoff will be at 6 p.m.
