Gulf Coast faces Southwest to get to 13-0
PERKINSTON – Mississippi Gulf Coast is the last unbeaten team in the MACJC, having survived a 78-77 scare at East Central on Monday.
Bulldogs coach Wendell Weathers figures his team's future is in its own hands, that the things that got them to 12-0 can keep carrying them to bigger things.
"For us, I think that if we do what we're capable of doing, what we're supposed to do and what we work on, I think it's all on us," he said. "I think if we run our offense the way we did against East Central, I think if we play defense the way we're capable of, we're pretty good. If we don't do those things, we're not better than anybody else."
The next test will come from Southwest when the Bears visit the Weathers/Wetzel Center on Thursday. Tipoff is at 7:15, following the women's game.
Southwest (7-4, 2-1) is keyed by 6-foot-8 forward Terrell Miller, who is averaging 10.2 points and 6.8 rebounds. He's committed to play at Murray State.
"They're gonna go pretty hard to their post guy, who is not a prototypical post player," Weathers said. "He probably shoots as many 3s as he does shots around the basket."
He said the Bears will probably show them both man and zone defenses, along with having the possibility of sprinkling in half-court and three-quarter-court presses.
To get to 13 wins Thursday, Gulf Coast has a simple formula to follow.
"It's all about good decisions. This team, for the most part, plays hard and plays together," Weathers said. "That's the only way we can be successful."
