Gulf Coast tries to rebound, regain South lead

Mississippi Gulf Coast has a clear goal after dropping its first game of the season, a double-overtime loss to Southwest.

The Bulldogs (12-1, 3-1 MACJC South) will be trying to get back to the top of the division when they travel to leaders Pearl River on Tuesday. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.

The Wildcats (10-3) are undefeated in four South Division games, one game ahead of Gulf Coast. They have a new coach in Chris Oney, who took over for Richard Mathis following his retirement mid-season.

The Bulldogs will be counting on Davion Cole-Johnson, who was named MGCCC Male Student-Athlete of the Week after a standout effort last week.

Cole-Johnson, a 6-foot-4 freshman forward from Glen Ellyn, Ill, averaged a team-best 24 points in a pair of games. He poured in 32 points in an 89-88 overtime loss to Southwest on Thursday, picking up six rebounds and dishing out four assists with two steals.

Cole-Johnson tied for a team-high 16 points in a 78-77 come-from-behind win at East Central, grabbing eight rebounds with two assists, a steal and a block. For the season, he is averaging 19.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

Gulf Coast returns to the Weathers/Wentzell Center on Thursday when Hinds visits. Tipoff in Perkinston is 7:30 p.m.
