Mills-Derouen, Nichols named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Dylan Mills-Derouen and Aidan Nichols have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for Feb. 13-19.

 

Mills-Derouen, a sophomore pitcher from Biloxi, pitched six shutout innings in a 5-0 victory over Baton Rouge. He allowed just three hits, striking out six and walking two.

 

Nichols, a freshman right fielder/pitcher from Brandon, went 3-for-4 in a pair of Mississippi Gulf Coast victories over Jefferson Davis. She had two triples and drove in two runs. Nichols went 1-for-1 in her only at-bat in an 11-3, five-inning win, and also had a walk. On her way to picking up in the win in the circle in a 12-4, five-inning victory in Game 2, she had two triples while allowing four runs on six hits.

Zach Parker, a sophomore guard from Biloxi, averaged 24.0 points on 43.8 percent shooting from the 3-point line in two games for Mississippi Gulf Coast. He had 21 points, three rebounds and three assists in an 81-71 victory over Meridian. Parker lit up No. 9 Jones County with 27 points, making 8-of-14 from the field, 4-of-8 from long range, and all seven free throw attempts. He shot 54.8 percent from the field.

 

Shaniqua Tobias, a sophomore from New Orleans, averaged 12.5 points, three assists and two steals in a pair of Mississippi Gulf Coast games last week.

 

Nora Keehn, a sophomore from Thibodaux, La., went 1-0 for Mississippi Gulf Coast's last week. She allowed only one earned run in an 11-3, five-inning victory over Jefferson, allowing three hits and striking out four.

 

Donald Stokes, a freshman shortstop from Ocean Springs, went 3-for-7 (.429) and had the game-winning two-run base hit in a 6-4 win over Baton Rouge. He went 1-for-4 and scored a run in a 5-0 win over Baton Rouge, and then went 2-for-3 with those two RBI in the nightcap. Stokes has a hit in every game this season, and was 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and five RBI in the first two innings of a game Friday against Mineral Area, which was rained out before it was an official contest.

 

John Murphy, a freshman from Mobile, lost only three games in sweeping a pair of matches against Faulkner State in a 7-2 victory. Murphy and Travis Bell won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, and he won his No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-2.

 

Katie Burrall, a sophomore from Hernando, lost only four games in winning a pair of matches as the Lady Bulldogs beat Faulkner State 8-1. Burrall teamed with Kaci Calhoun to win their No. 2 doubles match 8-3, then won at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0.
