Sexton, Rhodes named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Kristen Sexton and Chase Rhodes have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for Feb. 20-26.

Sexton slugged four doubles and drove in six runs while going 11-for-19 (.579) in seven games for Mississippi Gulf Coast. She went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI in a 7-5 loss at No. 1 LSU-Eunice. In the Rush Invitational in Meridian, she had hits in all five games, including a 2-for-3 game against No. 10 Shelton State (D-I) and a 3-for-4 performance against Baton Rogue. She went 2-for-2 against No. 19 Heartland with a double and two RBI.

Rhodes went 4-for-6 (.667) in a pair of games, and was a home run short of the cycle in a 12-10 victory over Dyersburg State. He drove in three runs in that game, then went on to add another two RBI in the nightcap, a 13-3 win over Kaskaskia in five innings.

Also nominated:

Ty Barnes, a freshman right-hander from Petal, struck out eight in a 13-3 win over Kaskaskia where he pitched all five innings. He didn't allow an earned run, with four hits and two walks.

Nora Keehn, a sophomore from Thibodaux, La., went 2-1 with 1.29 ERA last week for Mississippi Gulf Coast. She picked up a hard-luck 12-4 loss at No. 1 LSU-Eunice, allowing only three earned runs. She avenged that loss by beating LSU-E 1-0 at Meridian, striking out four and walking one while scattering eight hits. In a 19-1 blowout of No. 19 Heartland, she allowed four hits, struck out five and walked one. The sole run was unearned.

Winston Morgan, a sophomore point guard from Manchester, Conn., averaged 22.0 points, 6.5 assists and 2.5 assists in a pair of Gulf Coast victories last week. He had 21 points, nine assists and four steals in a 74-69 victory at Pearl River. Morgan got 23 points and had four assists in a 91-87 victory over Southwest on Sophomore Night. He made all 12 free throw attempts this week and ranks sixth in the country at 90.8 percent for the season. He hasn't missed since Feb. 2.

Eanna Sims, a freshman guard from Jackson, had two double-doubles for Mississippi Gulf Coast this week. She had 14 points and 12 assists in a 62-60 loss at Pearl River, and got 12 points and 14 rebounds in a 54-39 victory over Southwest on Sophomore Night.
