Evans, Mathis named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Tyler Evans and Lexie Mathis have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for March 13-19.

 

Evans, a sophomore first baseman from D'Iberville, batted .429 in four games for No. 13 Gulf Coast and extended his hit streak to six. In a 7-5 loss at Baton Rouge, he went 2-for-3 with a triple. In the first game that day, he went 2-for-4.

 

Mathis, a sophomore utility player from Mobile, batted .643 with three triples, a double and seven RBI in a 4-0 week for sixth-ranked Gulf Coast. She extended her streak of multi-hit games to five and has tripled in each of the last three games. Mathis went 4-for-7 in a doubleheader against Hinds and 5-for-7 in two games against Coahoma. She slugged 1.143 for the week.

Aidan Nichols, a freshman from Brandon, won three times with a 1.75 ERA. In an 8-3 complete game against Hinds, she allowed three hits while striking out five and allowing two earned runs. She entered the first game against Coahoma in the fourth inning and didn't allow a hit in a three innings of a 9-1 victory, striking out four. She pitched another complete game in the nightcap, allowing five hits and two runs in a 10-2 victory.

 

Chris Crosby, a sophomore pitcher from Harrison Central, struck out 16 in 10 innings. In three innings of a 10-3 start at Baton Rouge, he struck out seven without allowing an earned run. In a 4-1 loss to No. 11 Itawamba, he struck out nine in seven innings while allowing four hits and three runs.
