Sanders, Lewis named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Avery Sanders and Josh Lewis have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for April 2-8.

 

Sanders, a freshman right-hander from Thibodaux, La., pitched a complete game in Gulf Coast's 7-3 win in 8 innings at Northeast, striking out eight and walking two. She entered in the second inning of the nightcap and struck out four and also hit two home runs to help rally the Lady Bulldogs from 10 down. Her second homer tied the game at 15.

 

Lewis, a sophomore left-hander from Theodore, Ala., pitched a complete game in an 8-3 over No. 20 Hinds. He struck out 10, scattered seven hits and allowed just 2 earned runs. It is the Bulldogs' first nine-inning complete game of the season.

Mya Hopson, a freshman first baseman from Madison Central, went 3-for-4 in both games for No. 17 Mississippi Gulf Coast in a 1-1 week. She had a double and a home run in a 7-3 at Northeast, then had two doubles in a 16-15 loss in the nightcap. She drove in three runs in both games.

 

Reid Cudd, a sophomore from Wiggins, won both his matches in a 7-2 win over Hinds. He teamed with Evan Chubb to win 8-2 at No. 3 doubles, then won his No. 5 singles match 6-2, 6-3.

 

Tierney Holmes, a freshman from Greenwood, won both her matches in a 7-2 win over Hinds. She teamed with Megan Bankston to win 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, then dropped only one game in a straight-sets win at No. 3 singles.

 

Brandon Parker, a freshman from West Harrison, hit for the cycle and finished the week with 2 home runs and 10 RBI. He opened a doubleheader sweep at Mississippi Delta by hitting for the cycle, driving in 6 runs. He hit another homer in the second game and drove in four runs.
