Wedgeworth, Sanders named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Jackson Wedgeworth and Avery Sanders have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for April 9-15.

 

Jackson Wedgeworth, a sophomore from West Jones, finished second at the MACJC Championship to clinch the Hubert Tucker Award, given to the golfer with the lowest scoring average.

 

Avery Sanders, a freshman right-hander from Thibodaux, La., had two wins, including handing No. 4 Itawamba only its second conference loss of the season. She struck out 9 and walked 2, scattering 6 hits in an 8-1 win over Southwest. She also hit a home run. In a 7-4 win against Itawamba, she struck out 3 and allowed 8 hits.

 

Also nominated:

 

Megan Bankston, a freshman from Gulfport, won all four of her matches against Copiah-Lincoln and Coastal Alabama. She won twice at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles.

 

Evan Chubb, a freshman from St. Patrick, won all four of his matches this week against Copiah-Lincoln and Coastal Alabama. He won his No. 2 singles match against the Sun Chiefs 8-5.

 

Castor Lee, a freshman second baseman from Gulfport, batted .571 in a pair of losses at Northwest. He went 3-for-4 with a double in Game 1, then went 1-for-3 in a 6-5 loss in the nightcap.

 

Brittney Triplett, a sophomore shortstop from Brandon, batted .500 for Mississippi Gulf Coast as the Lady Bulldogs went 3-1, including a split with No. 4 Itawamba. She had hits in all four games and went 3-for-3 and 2-for-4 in a sweep of Southwest.
