Lopareva, Fagan named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Margarita Lopareva and Chase Fagan have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for May 7-13.

Lopareva, a freshman from Moscow, Russia, advanced to the semifinals of the No. 2 singles championship bracket the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Tournament. In a three-set marathon quarterfinal match, she upset No. 8-seed Kyning Tinninghast from Harford 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. She led the Lady Bulldogs to a 12th-place finish.

Fagan, a sophomore left fielder from Hancock High, helped slug Gulf Coast past Northwest in their Region 23 Tournament sweep in Senatobia. In the deciding 17-8 win in Game 2, he had a home run, a triple and two doubles while batting 4-for-6. He also had a hit in a 9-5 win in Game 1 and now has a seven-game hit streak.

Josh Lewis, a sophomore left-hander from Theodore, Ala., allowed three unearned runs in a 9-5 Game 1 victory at Northwest. He struck out eight and scattered eight hits.
