7 MGCCC teams win NJCAA academic honors

PERKINSTON — Seven Mississippi Gulf Coast teams have been named NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Honorable Mention winners for 2017-18, with five teams ranking in the top 10 among their sports across the country in all divisions.

 

Teams must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher to be honored. Gulf Coast tied with Meridian in the MACJC for having the most teams reach that plateau. The MGCCC Athletic Department's efforts in the classroom are overseen by Athletic Academic Advisor Julie Gallup.

 

The Lady Bulldogs tennis team had the school's highest GPA at 3.65 to rank fifth in that sport. They finished 12th at the NJCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship.

 

The Bulldogs baseball team tied for fifth in the country with a 3.44 GPA. The squad finished third in the Region 23 Tournament, losing to eventual national champion LSU-Eunice.

 

The women's soccer team had a 3.41 GPA to finished seventh, and the men's tennis team was tied for 10th at 3.27.

 

The national champion golf team finished 10th with a 3.28 GPA.

 

The softball (3.25 GPA) and women's basketball (3.16 GPA) teams also were honored.
