Showalter named MACCC Player of the Week

PERKINSTON — The nation's leader in scoring by kickers earned his first MACCC Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Gabriel Showalter, a sophomore kicker/punter from St. Martin, made all seven of his placement attempts in No. 6 Gulf Coast's 41-0 win over Hinds on Homecoming. He won the award in voting by the MACCC's sports information directors.

Showalter made both field goals and five extra points. Showalter has made all 43 extra points this year and leads the NJCAA in that category and kicking points.

On Saturday, he averaged 63.8 yards on kickoffs with one touchback and had 3-of-5 punts land inside the 20.

Showalter is the fifth Bulldog to earn weekly conference honors this season. Running back Jamari Thompson, quarterback Eli Anderson, linebacker Wyatt Wright and wide receiver Jay Dupree were previous winners.

Showalter is eligible for NJCAA weekly honors, which will be announced Wednesday.
