No. 6 Bulldogs open playoffs Saturday

PERKINSTON — Ask Mississippi Gulf Coast coach Jack Wright if his team's win over East Mississippi in the regular season means anything as the teams gear back up for a postseason rematch you get a simple answer.

"Not now," he said. "It was great then, but it's a new game. We're 0-0 this week."

The No. 6 Bulldogs will travel to Scooba to take on the No. 8 Lions in the MACCC semifinals. The game will be streamed at https://emcclive.com/watch-live/ or you can listen to the MGCCC broadcast at https://mgcccbulldogs.com/watch.

Northwest Mississippi (7-2) travels to Wesson to play Copiah-Lincoln (8-1) at 2 p.m. in the other semifinal.

Gulf Coast clinched a share of its fifth straight South Division title by shutting out Jones 23-0 at Ellisville. That made it back-to-back blankings, giving The Regulators three on the season. Only Highland has more in NJCAA Division I, with two of those coming against prep schools.

The Lions have won five straight by outscoring the opposition 212-71, having beaten Mississippi Delta 52-6 on Thursday to close out the regular season and win the MACCC North outright.

"They're a very explosive offense," Wright said. "They've put up huge numbers in the passing game and have a lot of receivers who can win one-on-one, open-field situations. They've put up a lot of points all year."

The Lions defense is an active, athletic group capable of big plays. They rank third in the NJCAA with 38 sacks but didn't have any in September's 42-17 loss to Gulf Coast at Scooba.

Eli Anderson (So., Philadelphia/Neshoba Central) threw five touchdown passes, three of them to Jay Dupree (So., Philadelphia, Miss./Neshoba Central). Kionte Curry (So., Mims, Fla./Cocoa) had two of The Regulators' three interceptions.

This will be a rematch of last year's MACCC semifinal, which EMCC won at Perkinston. Even though the Bulldogs have been in must-win situations the last three weeks after the loss to Co-Lin, this week's intensity figures to be ratcheted up another notch or two to playoff levels.

"Our kids are smart," Wright said. "They know the difference, and they know it will be a challenge and the game will be different. We've got to be at our best to have a chance to beat them again."

The Bulldogs defense got a boost last week from Dramarian McNulty (So., Brookhaven/Brookhaven). He's seen limited action this week because of injuries, but his 51-yard interception snuffed out the final hope for Jones.

"It's good to see him make a play last week," Wright said. "He's a great player and a leader. He's had a couple of tough injuries that have kept him from having the type of year he's capable of having, but he made a huge play in the game the other night. I'm not surprised. He would have made a lot more plays just like that had he been healthy.
