Bulldogs lose late to No. 4 Jones

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast took the fight to No. 4 Jones and got the first goal in the MACCC women's soccer showdown, but the Bobcats scored twice in the final 36 minutes to stay unbeaten.

The Bulldogs (7-5-1, 3-4-1 MACCC) lost 2-1 at Bary Thrash Field, but had a shot at stealing three points or even one point.

Tiffany Beasley (So., Ocean Springs/Ocean Springs) set off on a blistering run down the right flank and crossed just before reaching the end line. The pass deflected off Morgan Pickering (So., Wiggins/Stone) and wound up in the path of Kyla Smith (Fr., Hurley/East Central). She didn't miss for her team-leading 10th goal.

Jones (11-0, 8-0) knotted it up nine minutes later off a corner, and got the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute.

Gulf Coast remains in the seventh spot in the MACCC standings, the last one to qualify for the playoffs. The Bulldogs close out their home slate Tuesday when Itawamba visits Perk. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m., and ICC is one of the teams in the four-team battle for the final three playoff berths.
