#9 MGCCC streaks past Northeast 41-8

PERKINSTON---The Chad Huff era at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College began with a two thumbs up as the Bulldogs rolled past Northeast 41-8 giving Huff his first head coaching victory. The win was also the 9th in a row by Gulf Coast over the Tigers.

"It feels great," said Huff, who became the 20th head coach at Gulf Coast in December of 2013. "I'm proud of the way are guys came out strong. They had a lot of energy and played fast and hard."

Gulf Coast (1-0) stormed out to a 7-0 lead on a two play, 59 drive capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Jason Smith. Freshman Preston Dedeaux put up six more points on an 11-yard TD scamper to make it 14-0, then Smith found sophomore receiver Tyrone Williams on a 46-yard TD strike to up the lead to 21-0 at the end of the first quarter. Another Dedeaux touchdown run was sandwiched between the second TD pass from Smith to Williams from 10-yards out and a Tony Bridges 55-yard punt return for a score making it 41-0 Bulldogs at halftime.

Northeast produced the only scores of the second half when Tiger defender Antonio Ryland sacked Bulldog back-up quarterback Thad Miller in the end zone for a safety. Northeast running back Corbin White's 2-yard TD scamper making the final 41-8. Most of the third quarter featured the MACJC'S new Mercy Rule, where the game clock runs continuously if a team is ahead by 38 points or more in the second half.

"There were a lot of mistakes tonight, which you'd expect in the first game of the season," Huff added. "But again I was pleased with our effort in all three phases of the game. I can't say enough about how hard this team and our coaching staff has worked to get ready for the season. We'll enjoy the win, then get back to work."

Gulf Coast, ranked #9 in the NJCAA, takes on Northwest (0-1) Thursday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. at A.L. May Memorial Stadium in Perkinston.
