#4 MGCCC hammers #6 Jones 42-3

ELLISVILLE---Sophomore players at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College had this game circled on the calendar since a 52-42 loss to Jones last season that dethroned Gulf Coast from the Nation's #1 ranking.

On Thursday the Bulldogs got a measure of revenge…and more importantly a huge 42-3 MACJC South Division victory over the Bobcats. Gulf Coast (5-0, 3-0) jumped out to a 28-3 halftime lead and never looked back in the road victory.

"I thought this was our most complete game of the season," said Gulf Coast head coach Chad Huff. "We made a lot of explosive plays on offense and our defense nearly had a shutout. I'm proud of the intensity our team played with tonight."

Before the game both teams got into a heated war of words in the middle of the field, but cooler heads prevailed and both teams headed to their respective locker rooms. The Bulldogs then focused that energy into the game and roared out to a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Quarterback Jason Smith found Tevaris McCormick on a 19-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring with 5:42 to go in the first quarter. A 52-yard pass from Smith to Tyrone Williams set up a 7-yard TD run by freshman Chris Robinson to up the score to 14-0 with 13:48 to go in the first half. A fumble recovery by James Graves set up a nifty 57-yard touchdown run on a sweep by McCormick one play later and a 21-0 Bulldog advantage.

"I'm proud of the way our team played tonight", McCormick said. "We calmed down in the locker room after the confrontation on the field and got refocused to play."

Jones (4-1, 2-1) got its only points of the night on a 45-yard field goal 2 minutes later. The Bulldogs responded with a long scoring drive capped off by a 11-yard TD strike from Smith to Tyrone Williams, the duos 8th touchdown hook up of the season.

Smith, a University of Auburn commit, then ran for a score from 3 yards out in the third quarter then tossed a 33-yard TD pass to Jamaar Cole late in the third to set the final tally at 42-3.

MGCCC amassed 256 rushing yards and 230 passing yards. McCormick rushed for 142 yards and caught four passes for 67 yards. Tyrone Williams had seven catches for 116 yards.

"I'm excited to see how far we've come,' Huff added, "and what we have the potential to do the rest of the way."
