No. 1 Bulldogs sprint away from field

No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast ran away from the field in their second MACCC event of the season Tuesday, posting a 1-under round to win the Hinds Invitational easily.

Peyton Russell (So., Gautier/Gautier) continued his strong play, shooting 2-under to win by seven shots at Castlewoods Country Club in Brandon.

"We played well this week," Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. "It was a complete team effort. Everybody contributed, and everybody stuck to the gameplan. A couple of guys played a little better in their execution, but I couldn't be more pleased than to come away with a 31-shot win."

Gulf Coast was 1-under for the tournament to beat No. 10 East Central. Jones was another shot back at 31-over, and No. 2 Meridian was fourth at 34-over.

Russell shot 8-under for the two-day event to beat East Central's Paul Swanepoel. The Bulldogs dominated the All-Tournament Team, with Stanley Campbell (So., London, England/Essex Golf College), John Mark Mills (So., Pontotoc/Mike Bender Golf Academy) and Ludvig Behring (So., Sollentuna, Sweden/Osterakers Gymnasium) joining Russell.

"It feels really good to get this win after struggling the last couple of weeks," Russell said. "To finally post a really good round, a 6-under in the first round, was great. Today, I got off to a rough start, but on the back nine getting a couple of birdies coming in got that lead stretched out."

He had four birdies on the back, finishing the tournament with 13.

Campbell fired a second-round-leading 69 to finish fourth at 1-over. Mills and Behring were 3-over for the tournament.

Garner Seymour (So., Biloxi/Biloxi), who was playing as an individual, fired his second straight 74 to tie for seventh. Five Bulldogs finished in the top eight, and Harlan Yerger (Fr., Oxford/Oxford) tied for 15th.

Gulf Coast will be back in action next week in the MGCCC Fall Invitational. The 54-hole event starts Monday at Windance Country Club in Gulfport. It's a non-conference event, but there will be nine MACCC squads in the 15-school field.
