No. 1 Gulf Coast trails by 16 at GlenLakes
No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast made their path to a third straight GlenLakes Invitational a lot tougher with a mental mistake Monday.
The Bulldogs had a score thrown out because of an incorrect scorecard, and they went from seven shots back of No. 4 Central Alabama to 16 behind them. CACC, an NJCAA Division I school, shot 1-over in their first two rounds in Foley, Ala.
"We've got a lot of growing up to do, whether it's our practice plans or our mental game competing or something as simple as checking your scorecard," Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. "Golf's a game of integrity, and that's what we're represent as a team. We can't have those mistakes. It will not happen again. I can promise you that."
Stanley Campbell (So., London, England/Essex Golf College) fired a pair of 70s, and he's just one off the 36-hole leader. Central Alabama's Jackson Spybey is at 5-under.
Ludvig Behring (So., Sollentuna, Sweden/Osterakers Gymnasium) is tied for sixth at 1-over.
"Stan hit the ball extremely well," Thornton said. "He could have gotten a couple more putts to fall, but I thought he got a lot out of his rounds. He's sitting there a shot back, so he'll have a chance tomorrow to compete for another win."
Peyton Russell (So., Gautier/Gautier) shot 72-75, but the second-round scorecard he turned in said 73. That forced his score to be thrown out, and the Bulldogs had to count their fifth score.
The tournament at GlenLakes Golf Club ends Tuesday with the final round. The Bulldogs trailed going into the final round the last two years, but they've got a lot more ground to make up this time.
"We've got two guys in the hunt but a lot of ground to make up," Thornton said. "Hopefully, this lights a fire under the team, and we go out and perform well tomorrow. Central Alabama has a heckuva a team and they played really well. We were right there with them, but it's unfortunate that checking your scorecard is going to be the difference in the outcome of the tournament."
