No. 1 Bulldogs trail at Dancing Rabbit
No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast finds itself in an unfamiliar position after the first day of play at the Chris Clark Invitational.
The Bulldogs trailed Meridian by three shots after the first round on the Azalea Course at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club in Philadelphia. It's the first time they haven't posted the lowest round in an MACCC competition since the first round of the first conference tournament of the 2022-23 season.
The teams stayed on the course Monday to try to get as much of the second round finished before expected wet weather Tuesday.
The Bulldogs shot 7-over in the first round, led by Stanley Campbell (So., London, England/Essex Golf College) who was third at even-par 72. John Mark Mills (So., Pontotoc/Mike Bender Golf Academy) and Grayson Lockhart (Fr., Starkville/Oak Hill Academy) are tied for seventh at 2-over.
Mills finished his second round, shooting a 70 to get back to even for the tournament. Campbell was even through 15, and Peyton Russell (So., Gautier/Gautier) was 1-over through 13.
Gulf Coast was 4-over for the second round when play was halted, and coach Brad Thornton thinks his squad is about four shots off the lead.
Gulf Coast hasn't lost to MACCC competition since the 2022 MACCC Championship at Wolf Hollow in Wesson. Meridian beat the Bulldogs there.
