No. 1 Bulldogs lead MACCC event after 18

SAUCIER — No. 1 Mississippi Gulf Coast took charge of the first MACCC golf tournament of the fall Monday. The hosts lead No. 10 East Central by seven shots at Grand Bear Golf Club.

No. 7 Meridian is another three shots back.

"We played pretty solid throughout the day," Bulldogs coach Brad Thornton said. "We made a few key mistakes early in the spring, a couple of big numbers that kept us from putting this thing out of reach. Overall, I'd say that's a really good score out here today."

Stanley Campbell (So., London, England/Essex Golf College) and Garner Seymour (So., Biloxi/Biloxi) top the leaderboard, with Campbell posting a 4-under 68. Seymour is a shot back, with Meridian's Bruce McClung and East Central's Jamie Stace at 2-under.

Campbell played a solid round, with five birdies and a bogey. Garner made six birdies.

"Anytime your five-man can come in and shoot an under-par round and give you a counting score, that's what they're there for," Thornton said. "Luckily, we've got guys in and out of our top five who can do that. He's playing well right now."

Peyton Russell (So., Gautier/Gautier) shot 73, and John Mark Mills (So., Pontotoc/Mike Bender Golf Academy) and Ludvig Behring (So., Sollentuna, Sweden/Osterakers Gymnasium) are 3-over.

Gulf Coast's B team is in eighth place. Grayson Lockhart (Fr., Starkville/Oak Hill Academy) leads that foursome with a 76, and Andrew Miller (Fr., Tupelo/Tupelo) shot 77.
