Campbell just misses medalist at GlenLakes

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast's Stanley Campbell made a strong run at medalist Tuesday at the GlenLakes Invitational, but he came up one shot short.

He fired a 5-under 67 to lead two Bulldogs on the All-Tournament Team, and Gulf Coast bounced back from a disappointing second round to pick up two shots on Central Alabama on the way to a second-place finish.

"We played really well," Gulf Coast coach Brad Thornton said. "Hats off to Central Alabama. They had a great tournament. There are still some improvements we need to make, but to respond today with the lowest round of the tournament shows we can compete with anybody."

Campbell finished at 9-under, one shot behind Central Alabama's Jackson Spybey. Spybey matched his 5-under Tuesday to hold onto first.

"He fought all week," Thornton said. "He might not have played perfect golf, but he played darned near close to it with course conditions and the weather. It's his second year in a row to finish second by one shot in that tournament. You hate he couldn't get it done, but there's nothing for him to hang his head about with a performance like that."

Ludvig Behring (So., Sollentuna, Sweden/Osterakers Gymnasium) was one of three Bulldogs to shoot 1-under 71s, and he joined Campbell on the All-Tournament Team.

John Mark Mills (So., Pontotoc/Mike Bender Golf Academy) moved up six places on the leaderboard to 15th with his 71, and Peyton Russell (So., Gautier/Gautier) bounced back from his scorecard mistake Tuesday to shoot 1-under.

Central Alabama, the fourth-ranked team in NJCAA Division I, finished at 5-under. Gulf Coast, No. 1 in Division II, shot 8-under in the final round.

The Bulldogs finished 18 shots ahead of No. 10 (D-II) Eastern Florida State.

"I think we're moving in the right direction," Thornton said. "We're not there yet. It wasn't just the response to yesterday, but it was the response to not playing particularly well the past month or so. I like the improvements I've seen."
