No. 5 MGCCC loses at home

PERKINSTON — No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast dug itself too big a hole to climb out of, and a last-second shot off the post doomed the Bulldogs to a 2-1 loss Monday to Meridian at Bary Thrash Field.

Meridian (1-2) scored twice off free kicks in the first half.

Gulf Coast wouldn't score until Alwayne Whittaker (Fr., Biloxi/Biloxi) pounced on a rebound with 11 minutes to play to cut the deficit in half.

The Bulldogs nearly got the equalizer with 15 seconds left. Off a scramble following a corner kick, the ball fell to Ashton Taylor (Fr., Olive Branch/Center Hill) at the top of the area. His right-footed shot clanged off the post to the left of the Meridian keeper, and the Eagles were able to clear to run out the clock.

Gulf Coast (2-1) is scheduled to travel to Jones on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
