Inchima scores twice for No. 12 Gulf Coast

PERKINSTON — No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast has emerged from a bit of an early-season scoring drought, and Christian Inchima being available has been a big part of it.

He had a pair of goals Friday in a 5-1 win over Southwest Mississippi at Bary Thrash Field, the Bulldogs' biggest win of the season.

"He's been back the last three games," Gulf Coast coach Chris Handy said, "and maybe that's the reason we've started scoring goals again."

The Bulldogs have won three straight and scored 13 goals while doing so. They are now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the MACCC South.

Inchima (So., Brampton Ontario/St. Edmond Campion) scored the opener, and it was the goal of the night. Chad McKnight (So., Byram/Terry) took a long throw into the Southwest box, and Inchima knew exactly what Abdul Omar (Fr., Madison/Germantown) had in mind.

"Abdul called it and said play off me when Chad had the throw," Inchima said. "Me and him knew what was going to happen. He laid it off to me, and I only had one thing on my mind, and that was to shoot."

The ball never touched the ground as Inchima rifled a left-footed volley home in the sixth minute.

Fabien Barker (Fr., Madison/Madison Central) scored off an Ashton Taylor (Fr., Olive Branch/Center Hill) assists in the 30th minute. Six minutes later, Taylor scored off another McKnight throw.

James Redmond (So., Bremen, Germany/Oberschule Roter Sand) made it 4-0 before halftime, and he set up Inchima's second in the 68th minute.

Only a Southwest penalty kick in the 84th minute spoiled the Bulldogs' second clean sheet of the season.

"I think we made progress," Handy said. "Going forward we're being a little more forceful, but there are still steps we need to take. It's definitely an improvement the past couple of games, but we have a big one on Monday. Our focus turns to that."

The Bulldogs travel to play archrival Pearl River on Monday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Poplarville.
