Softball wins 1, loses 1 in Louisiana

Mississippi Gulf Coast finished the Mardi Gras Invitational with three wins after splitting Saturday. The Bulldogs beat Kilgore 11-0 before losing 9-8 against Lamar State-Port Arthur in Youngsville, La.

Savannah Wilbanks (So., Southaven/DeSoto Central) and Irina Sanford (So., Lucedale/George County) had two hits in the first game. Wilbanks, Annaston Tate (Fr., Waynesboro/Wayne County) and Emma Thomson (So., Sulphur, La./Sulphur) had two RBI each.

Olivia Falcon (So., St. Amant, La./St. Amant) threw a three-hitter, striking out four against one walk. She threw 54 strikes in 76 pitches.

The Bulldogs took advantage of seven walks and a hit batsman.

Against Lamar State, the Bulldogs fell behind twice. Down 5-0 in the second, they responded with five runs. Baleigh Tullos (Fr., Hurley/East Central) had a two-run double, and Wilbanks drove her in with a single to tie the score.

After the Seagulls scored twice in the third, Brooklyn Mitchell (Fr., Gulfport/St. Patrick) doubled in two runs to make it 7-7.

LMPA added a run in the fourth and seventh, and Sanford cut the deficit to one with an RBI single. The Bulldogs stranded the tying run at third when the game ended.

Gulf Coast (5-1) travels to Mobile on Tuesday to play Bishop State. The doubleheader starts at noon. The Bulldogs' home opener will be Thursday when Coastal Alabama-South visits for a 2 p.m. twinbill.
