No. 22 MGCCC loses heartbreaker at Wesson

No. 22 Mississippi Gulf Coast missed a golden opportunity to get a split at No. 4 Copiah-Lincoln on Tuesday but couldn't make an extra-inning lead stand up in the nightcap.

The Bulldogs lost 4-3 after falling 11-5 earlier in Wesson.

They wasted a strong outing by Brighley Crayon (Fr., Montgomery, La./Montgomery), who only allowed one earned run in eight-plus innings. The Bulldogs committed a pair of errors behind her, including one in the ninth that allowed Co-Lin to tie the game.

Gulf Coast took a 3-2 lead in the top of the inning when Abby Lindsey (Fr., Decatur, Ala./Austin) hit a bloop behind the circle that the shortstop dove for and missed. That allowed a runner to score from second.

Annaston Tate (Fr., Waynesboro/Wayne County) had an RBI single in the first to make it 2-0 after a Co-Lin error prolonged the inning.

Brooklyn Mitchell (Fr., Gulfport/St. Patrick) had four of the Bulldogs' 12 hits, and Caroline Batson (Fr., Wiggins/Stone) had two. Lindsey and Tate had two hits each.

In the first game, Batson had two hits, including a two-out, two-run single in the third that tied the game at 2. Savannah Wilbanks (So., Southaven/DeSoto Central) had a pop fly in the sixth that forced two errors, scoring her and two others, and got the Bulldogs within 7-5.

The Bulldogs' weekend doubleheader at Northeast Mississippi has been moved to Friday. First pitch in Booneville will be at noon.
