Mississippi Gulf Coast picked up a pair of road softball wins Tuesday, improving to 7-1 on the young season. The Bulldogs needed extra innings in both games to sweep Bishop State in Mobile.
Gulf Coast won the opener 7-5 in nine innings and 8-4 in eight to close out the sweep.
"We had two good starting pitching performances," Gulf Coast coach David Kuhn said. "(Olivia Falcon) came in and did an outstanding job in relief in both games. We got some good timely hitting. It's tough to win on the road, so I'm happy to get out of there with two wins."
Karley Rouse (So., D'Iberville/D'Iberville) started the opener and went seven innings, allowing eight hits. Falcon pitched the final two innings, allowing one unearned run.
The Bulldogs forced a couple of errors in the ninth, scoring a run on the second. They made it 6-4 with a double-steal, then Brooklyn Mitchell (Fr., Gulfport/St. Patrick) knocked in another with a single. She finished with two RBI.
AB Parrish (So., Corinth/Alcorn Central) and Emma Thomson (So., Sulphur, La./Sulphur) had two hits each, with Thomson driving in two.
Madison Laiche (Fr., Luling, La./John Curtis) drove in a pair of runs in the second game while pitching seven innings. She allowed just one earned run, but the Bobcats forced extra innings with three unearned runs in the seventh.
Irina Sanford (So., Lucedale/George County), who had three hits, drove in two runs with a two-out single, and two more scored on an error. Falcon retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to close it out.
Gulf Coast opens its home schedule Thursday when Coastal Alabama-South visits Ross-Smith Field. First pitch in the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
