Lady Bulldogs fall to Southwest
PERKINSTON – Mississippi Gulf Coast suffered a second consecutive loss for the firs time this season, falling 66-59 to Southwest at the Weathers/Wetzel Center.
Still, there were encouraging signs, particularly in the Lady Bulldogs' effort. They battled back from double-digit deficits during the first three quarters, eventually tying the Lady Bears at 50 with 9:10 left in the game.
"I was pleased with that," Gulf Coast coach Jason Conner said. "We missed some layups, but we played hard. I don't think we executed late, but Southwest hit some big shots when they needed to."
Markeisha Watson led Gulf Coast (9-4, 1-3 MACJC) with 14 points despite sitting for large stretches of the game with foul trouble, picking up her fifth 2:19 to play. Kailin Young and Kamisha Tarvin had 11 each.
Southwest improved to 12-1, 4-0.
After 50-50 tie, Southwest went on a 7-0 run to open their lead back out, and Gulf Coast never got closer than five the rest of the way.
"I thought we had maybe our best game preparation, and the kids knew what to expect," Conner said. "Southwest executed their stuff."
Gulf Coast returns to action Tuesday on the road at archrival Pearl River.
