Johnson, Helms named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — R'Tarriun Johnson and Hannah Helms have been named MGCCC Student-Athletes of the Week for Oct. 15-21.

Johnson, a sophomore safety from Stone High, had 10 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception in Gulf Coast's 30-7 win over Pearl River. He also had two tackles for loss, and his 30-yard interception return in the fourth quarter set up a short touchdown drive to seal the victory.

Helms, a freshman from Southaven, had a goal and an assist for Gulf Coast, which went 2-1-1 and advanced to the MACJC championship game. The holding midfielder's inswinging corner kick found the head of a teammate for Gulf Coast's only goal in a 1-0 win over Hinds in the quarterfinals. She opened scoring in the title game with a penalty, and also calmly made her penalty kick in 4-2 shootout win to oust No. 10 Holmes in the quarterfinals following a scoreless draw.

Also nominated:

Marquise Bridges, a freshman wide receiver from Brookhaven, caught four passes for 113 yards at Pearl River. Three of his catches were for 33-plus yards, one of which converted a fourth-and-11 and another on third-and-17.
