Hopkins, Lopareva named MACJC Student-Athletes of the Week

PERKINSTON — Jon Hopkins and Margarita Lopareva have been named MACJC Student-Athletes of the Week for March 11-17.

 

Hopkins, a freshman golfer from Bishop's Stortford, England, won medalist at the Carey Collegiate Classic, leading No. 2 Gulf Coast to a nine-shot win over a field of four-year schools. Hopkins shot 7-under.

 

Lopareva, a sophomore tennis player from Moscow, Russia, won all four of her matches for the Lady Bulldogs.

Wesley Fontaine, a freshman tennis player from Biloxi, won two doubles and two singles matches as No. 14 Gulf Coast defeated Coastal Alabama-South and East Central, both by 8-1 scores.

 

Kristen Cade, a freshman right-hander from Harrison Central, struck out 12 while throwing a three-hit shutout for No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast against No. 14 Highland in a 3-0 win. She entered the second game in relief in a 5-3 loss, striking out four in 2.1 innings.

 

Dee Hawthorne, a freshman from Harrison Central, batted .667 in three road wins for Gulf Coast. He went 2-for-3 with a walk in all three games, with a home run and three RBI in a 12-2 win at Nunez. He had a double and a triple in a 7-3 win at Coahoma, capping a sweep after a 12-2 win in the opener. He slugged 1.333 and had an OBP of .750.

 

Dawson Hall, a freshman from Mobile, Ala., didn't allow a hit in a four-inning start at Nunez, helping Gulf Coast to a 9-2 win. He's 3-0.
