Spivery leads MGCCC in Mobile

LaRaymond Spivery led five Mississippi Gulf Coast teammates in double digits Monday as the Bulldogs went on the road and downed Bishop State 83-62 in Mobile.

The Bulldogs (2-0) led by five at halftime and pulled away in the second half.

"I think the big difference from the first half to the second half was turnovers," Gulf Coast coach Wendell Weathers said. "We made an ungodly number of turnovers in the first half. Nobody made us do it, we just did it. In the second half, we had very few turnovers. As a result of that, we scored a lot more."

Spivery (So., Lucedale /George County) had 17 points, and Mykah Brown (Fr., Petal /Petal) added 14. DaJuan Moorer (So., Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola Catholic) and Keevon Oney chipped in 12 each and Willie Logan had 11.

Gulf Coast led 39-34 at the break and doubled the lead in the first five minutes of the second half. It was 60-45 with 11 minutes to play.

"The second half was the best we've played in a 20-minute stretch," Weathers said. "It was pretty consistently offensive and defensively. Tonight, it looked like they are starting to learn and figure it out. The longer we played, the better we go tonight."

Gulf Coast plays at Baton Rouge on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
