Late Bulldogs dunk caps comeback at SWCC

Mississippi Gulf Coast's LaRaymond Spivery threw an alley-oop to DaJuan Moorer with 32 seconds left for the winning bucket Thursday in a 67-65 comeback victory over Southwest at Summit.

"It worked the way we drew it up," Gulf Coast coach Wendell Weathers said. "If LaRaymond can get off that screen and get inside, he's either going to get to the rim or Quan is going to be wide open."

Spivery (So., Lucedale/George County) led the Bulldogs with 14 points, and Moorer (So., Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola Catholic) added 12.

Gulf Coast has held its last four opponents to 65 or fewer points and ranked third in the country in scoring defense coming into Thursday's game. The defense helped turned the game when the Bulldogs fell behind 61-55 with 6:30 to play.

Moorer's bucket three minutes later capped an 8-0 run that put Gulf Coast back in front, and the Bulldogs wouldn't trail again.

"We got behind six, and our kids just don't get flustered," Weathers said. "They stay the course and let their defense do the work. They just get it done. I thought it just a really solid performance."

The teams swapped baskets and free throws before the Moorer's winning score. Southwest (10-2, 2-1 MACJC South) missed four field goals in the final 20 seconds to give the Bulldogs the win.

Gulf Coast (11-1, 3-0) is tied for first in the division with Pearl River.

"It means we're better than six other teams at this point," Weathers said. "Every time you play, every game is important. I told our guys to enjoy tonight, but in the morning, we've got to forget about this one and get ready for Meridian."

The Bulldogs return to the Weathers-Wentzell Center on Thursday to play the Eagles. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
