Gulf Coast beats Hinds

Mississippi Gulf Coast heads into the postseason on a winning note after the Bulldogs downed Hinds 89-83 in Utica on Thursday night.

"It's one of those games," Gulf Coast coach Wendell Weathers said. "The game had no meaning for anybody. I thought we were pretty good offensive, and defensively I thought we were terrible."

The Bulldogs, who won seven of their last eight, closed out the regular season 19-4 overall, 11-3 in the MACJC South. They will be the third seed from the division headed into the state tournament.

Hinds (11-12, 4-10) didn't qualify for the postseason.

Gulf Coast will play Northeast in the first round of the MACJC Tournament on Tuesday in Ellisville. The schedule will be announced Friday.

"If they'll embrace the fact the regular season is over, and we're playing for a championship next week, then we've got as good a chance as anybody to win," Weathers said. "We've got to play hard for all 40 minutes, on both ends of the floor, for three days in a row. The team that does that is the team that will win."
